(
Syria) After years of protesting against the Syrian Government in which to get them to repeal Article 548, the rule which allowed men to murder their women folk if they suspected foul play:
Article 548
1. He who catches his wife, or one of his ascendants, descendents or sister committing adultery (flagrante delicto) or illegitimate sex acts with another and he kills or injures one of both of them benefits from an exemption of penalty
2. He who catches his wife, or one of his ascendants, descendents or sister in a suspicious state (attitude equivoce) with another and he kills or injures one of both of them benefits from an exemption of penalty.
President Bashar al-Assad has issued a decree which scraps a law limiting the length of sentences handed down to men convicted of killing female relatives they suspect of having illicit sex.
Good news or what? Now, instead of serving a maximum of 1 year for the crime of killing your females, the new law stipulates you may have to serve a minimum of 2 years.
A great victory for the human rights crowd. I’m sure that a lot of women in Syria will be burning their bras tonight. I mean the threat of doing 2 years for murder will surely put honorable men off doing so.
